National EPA Award For Student Research Turning Wastewater into Plastic
A team of UC Davis engineering students received one of six $75,000 grants awarded nationally to continue the research and implementation of their technology that uses microbes to create bio-degradable plastic from the carbon in wastewater.

Nanotechnology in Reverse Uses Cell to Calibrate Tools
Volkmar Heinrich, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, and graduate student Chawin Ounkomol are turning the rules of nanotechnology around. Their research shows how they can use a red blood cell to calibrate a sensitive instrument, an atomic force microscope. Ounkomol's work is supported by the highly competitive Graduate Research and Education in Adaptive bioTechnology (GREAT) Training Grants, awarded by the UC Systemwide Biotechnology Research and Education Program.

Computation Pioneer Elected to American Academy
Berni J. Alder, professor emeritus in the Department of Applied Science and a researcher at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, has been elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is widely regarded as the founder of molecular dynamics, a type of computer simulation used for studying the motions and interactions of atoms over time.

Amit Kanvinde Receives 2008 Norman Medal
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has awarded the prestigious Norman Medal to Amit Kanvinde, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, and his former advisor Gregory G. Deierlein for the paper, "The Void Growth Model and the Stress Modified Critical Strain Model to Predict Ductile Fracture in Structural Steels". The Norman Medal is cited by ASCE in recognition of a paper that makes a definitive contribution to engineering science.

International Conference on Atmospheric Chemical Mechanisms: Special Section in Atmospheric Environment
The second International Conference on Atmospheric Chemical Mechanisms will be held during 10-12 December 2008 at the University of California, Davis. The Technical Program Committee is chaired by Ian Barnes, University of Wuppertal and Michael Pilling, University of Leeds. Support has already been received from the California Air Resources Board, the US EPA, the European Science Foundation Program INTROP and the EC Sixth Framework Program infrastructure project EUROCHAMP.

Lavernia Appointed Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
Enrique J. Lavernia, dean of the College of Engineering, has been appointed Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor at UC Davis for a three-year term beginning January 1, 2009. Consultation will begin immediately to appoint an interim dean during this time.

UC Entrepreneurship Academy - September 15 - 19, 2008
The UC Entrepreneurship Academy is a one-week business development intensive designed for science and engineering PhD students, postdocs, and research faculty who want to learn to commercialize their research, explore business development before heading into a career in industry, or take the first steps toward launching a new venture.

Business Development Certificate Program - September 2008 - June 2009
Through a year-long program, Fellows take a series of five Graduate School of Management courses on innovation, technology management, new ventures, and business development under the guidance of GSM faculty, investors and entrepreneurs--all designed to give them a solid foundation in business development and the skills they need to move their ideas from the lab to the marketplace.

Engineering Awards 565 Grad and Undergrad Degrees
The UC Davis College of Engineering awarded 288 bachelor of science degrees at the 46th annual spring commencement ceremony on June 13.

New College of Engineering Mace
A new mace, used for the first time in the spring 2008 UC Davis College of Engineering commencement ceremony, was designed and fabricated by students and staff in the Engineering Fabrication Laboratory.

Endowed Professorship for Lund
Professor Jay Lund has been appointed as the Ray B. Krone Professor of Environmental Engineering. A member of the faculty in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering since 1987, Lund has established an international reputation for his contributions to research in water resources and environmental systems.

Chattot Named to Endowed Professorship
Professor Jean-Jacques Chattot, chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering and director of the Center for Computational Fluid Dynamics, has been named to the Warren & Leta Giedt Professorship.

UC Davis College of Engineering Hosts Solartaxi
Louis Palmer, a teacher from Lucerne, Switzerland, made a stop in Davis during his attempt to be the first person to drive a solar-powered vehicle around the world. The UC Davis College of Engineering hosted the Solartaxi's visit to Davis, providing the team with a shop for repairs and a garage to house the vehicle.

UC Davis hosted the 4th decennial Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics Conference on May 18-22, 2008. GEESD IV brought together a global community of geo-professionals working on earthquake engineering and soil dynamics problems.

Kavvas Named Fellow of American Society of Civil Engineers
Levent Kavvas, UC Davis professor of civil engineering, has been named a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). ASCE Fellows are eminent engineers who have made significant technical or professional contributions and have demonstrated notable achievement in their field. Kavvas is a leader in hydrologic research and practice.

2009-10 Fulbright U.S. Student Grant Program
The 09-10 Fulbright Grant application season is now open. The program offers up to one year of international funding for recent undergraduates and graduate students to explore research interests, graduate or independent study projects, and/or teaching opportunities in participating countries.
