Dean Enrique Lavernia Visits Hyundai Motor Group

Posted on: November 7, 2012

Enrique Lavernia, dean of the College of Engineering at UC Davis, recently returned from an overseas visit to Hyundai Motor Group headquartered in Seoul, Korea. The trip continued development of the “Hyundai Center of Excellence in Vehicle Dynamic Systems Control” within the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at UC Davis.

Hyundai Vice Chairman Woongchul Yang hosted Dean Lavernia and familiarized him with the leadership of Hyundai, including President HaiJin Kim, head of Powertrain, and HaeHwan Jee, Executive Vice President, R&D Planning & Coordination Group. Research engineer Emmanuel Sin of Hyundai's R&D Strategy Team staffed Dean Lavernia throughout the visit.

During the visit, Dean Lavernia invited Vice Chairman Yang to become a member of the College of Engineering’s Strategic Leadership Board. The College’s Strategic Leadership Board is a distinguished group of thought-leaders whose expertise and industry leadership represent, inspire, and honor the College. Industry leaders Irwin Jacobs, Masahiko Mori, Stratton Sclavos, and Bill Sullivan are among the current membership of the Strategic Leadership Board.

Dean Lavernia participated in presentations and tours from the R&D facility, the Sheet Metal Group, Hyundai Auto Museum, and test-drove the latest vehicles from Hyundai; including a Fuel Cell Vehicle, Hybrid, Electric and the luxury flagship Equus.

When the Hyundai Center of Excellence in Vehicle Dynamic Systems Control opens, scheduled for spring 2013, VC Yang and his distinguished colleagues from Hyundai will participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony at UC Davis.
